How can I reduce the environmental impact of my car?
Although use of the motor car is probably one of the most environmentally damaging things you can do, it is essential to many peoples lives.  There are, however, ways that you can reduce your impact on the enviroment whilst using your car.   Click on a specific link above or follow some of the tips below.

1. Think about whether you really need to make the journey by car.  Walk, cycle or get the bus or train as an alternative
2. Keep your tyres at the correct pressure and check them regularly.  Not only is it dangerous to drive a car with the wrong tyre pressures it can also use up more petrol due to the increased friction with the road if they are underinflated.  Not to mention wearing them out quicker.
3. Don't carry excess weight.  Remove roofbars, and don't leave items in the boot if you don't need them as any extra weight means more petrol is used.
4. Drive calmly.  Excessive breaking and accelerating will not only wear the car out quicker it uses more fuel.
5. Change gear at high revs.  If you change gear when the revs are low it will labour the engine and use more fuel.  Gear changes should result in a smooth transition of power as I'm sure your driving instructor will have told you.
6. Offset your carbon.  See the EcoOffset link for details of carbon offsetting to cover your essential journeys.
