About
Q: How can I reduce my energy bills?
A: There are numerous ways to save on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time and many of them will cost you little or nothing at the outset.   Click on the links to the left for specific advice on each area.

Some general tips are:

Switch off
Don't leave electrical items on standby unless you have to.  If you need a DVD-recorder or video on standby overnight, put the TV  on a different plug socket and switch it off rather than leave everything plugged in.
Make sure the lights are switched off when you leave the room.
Don't leave mobile charger's plugged in beyond the charge time of the phone as these will continue to use electricity whilst not providing any extra charge.

Kettles
Only boil what you need to drink in the kettle.  Boiling a full kettle uses as much energy as is required to light your house in a whole evening.

Cover food when cooking
Sounds simple but, but putting lids on pans and covering open pots with foil will reduce the cooking time significantly and save gas or electricity.

Washing
Wash at 30 degrees, it will still get your clothes clean.  Use a washing line rather than a tumble dryer it's free, and if you hang it out straight away and fold it when you bring it in, it will minimise the need for ironing.
